Location of Birken in Kempten (Allgäu) |
Birken is a wasteland and part of the independent city of Kempten (Allgäu) . The wasteland belonged to the municipality of Sankt Mang until 1972 , which was annexed to Kempten that year.
history
Birken was still called "Sanzen" in 1294 and until 1353 belonged to the lords of Liebenthan-Wolfsattel. Later the wasteland was called "Birkhen" or "Bürken" (Hof des Bürk). In 1442 the farm was sold to a Hans von Ronsberg together with the Liebenthann lordship, which had meanwhile been inherited by a noble family "von Rechberg". Five years later, the farm presumably passed to the Kempten monastery . In 1526 a Hanns Hewl zum Santzen signed the Memmingen Treaty .
In 1819 Birken consisted of a single courtyard with four residents. In 1900 there were already two houses with eleven residents. In 1954 there were 14 residents in Birken.
