Bachtelsteig is an officially named part of the municipality and a wasteland of the independent city of Kempten (Allgäu) . The district is located on Mariaberger Straße, but uses Bachtelsteig as the street address .

This isolated settlement is mentioned in 1502 as zur Bechtenstaig am Kniebos . In 1543 the place was mentioned repeatedly as zur Berchtensteig , in 1558/1602 as uffm Knieboß Berchteldstaig . The place name suggests that it is a Steig des Bercht. The addition of the place Kniebos historically serves as a location name for several surrounding villages.

The single farm belonged to the main Mariaberg team . A farm with an area of ​​36.51 days' work (12.44 hectares ) was mentioned as early as 1800 in house statistics .

When the community was formed in 1818, Bachtelsteig was added to the rural community of Sankt Lorenz , but on April 1, 1935, together with some neighboring settlements, it was divested from Sankt Lorenz and transferred to the town of Kempten and subsequently also belongs to the Kempten district .
