Location of Heiligkreuz in Kempten (Allgäu)

The Heiligkreuz monastery

Heiligkreuz is a parish village in the independent city of Kempten (Allgäu) . Heiligkreuz is by far the largest village in the St. Lorenz district and since 1945 has been the seat of the municipal administration of this municipality, which was independent until 1972. The creation of Heiligkreuz is closely related to the Heiligkreuz monastery there .

Heiligkreuz has its own local cemetery with a war memorial . With the exception of a gap of 150 meters, Heiligkreuz has grown together structurally with Neuhausen , the second largest town in the former municipality, to the east .

history

The name Heiligkreuz originated in 1691 through the so-called blood miracle . Five eyewitnesses took the oath not to lie. In the same year, a cross was placed in place of the alleged fivefold source of blood. A pilgrimage came to the place in order to be solved from his own needs. Before that, the wasteland of Krönling was located there.

In 1694, Prince Abbot Rupert von Bodman had a wooden chapel built on this site. An apartment for the pilgrimage priest was built next to it. Another wooden building was used to accommodate the church sacrament. In 1711 the wooden chapel was replaced by a baroque stone building. This building exists today in the monastery as the choir of the church house. Four years later, a Lenzfrieder Fransiskaner priest took over responsibility for the chapel, and in 1716 a monastery building was allowed to be erected. In the next few years the monastery was steadily expanded and people settled around the monastery.

Heiligkreuz was part of the main team (finest spatial subdivision of the medieval care offices ) Neuhausen.

In house statistics around 1800, five properties with a total area of 292.70 days' work (99.73 hectares ) were identified:

  • Innkeeping (100.98 days work)
  • Monastery Church (187.55)
  • School (3.55)
  • Shoemaker's Building (0.53)
  • Building (Fronknecht) (0.03)

In the list of places from 1840 Heiligkreuz is listed as a hamlet with four houses and 26 inhabitants.

The first official gazette of 1875 gives seven buildings with 38 inhabitants for the "hamlet with church", two of them Protestants. At that time the monastery church was an exposition of the parish of St. Lorenz in Kempten.

In 1818 Heiligkreuz became part of the new municipality of St. Lorenz , in 1945 the municipal administration was relocated from Hirschdorf to Heiligkreuz. In 1960 a people's and community library was opened in Heiligkreuz. In 1972 Heiligkreuz was incorporated into the municipality of St. Lorenz zu Kempten (Allgäu) .

In 1961 there were 245 inhabitants in Heiligkreuz, compared to 493 in 1987.

Müller's large German local register (30th edition, 2007) gives 415 inhabitants, but without reference to time.
