The first edition appeared in 1922 under the title Lambertis German local book for postal and rail traffic . The second edition appeared in 1926 and was named after the new editor, the postmaster Friedrich Müller .
Due to the division of Germany, the 18th edition from 1974 had no information from the GDR area . After reunification, an interim volume for the new federal states was published in 1992. The 25th edition 1994/95 comprised a directory for old and new federal states.
In 2004 the second digital edition appeared on CD-ROM with 126,000 place names.

criticism
- There are no population figures for the capital of a municipality. Instead, the population of the municipality is shown.
- In the case of the population figures of districts , it is not indicated on which reference date they were collected. A check reveals that these are mostly the 1970 census results, in rare cases 1950 or 1961 as well.
- For districts that were the main town of a former municipality that only lost its independence after 1972, the population of the former municipality is often given. The key date of the surveys cannot be determined here at all.
