Brilliant Disguise is a song by Bruce Springsteen . It appeared on the 1987 album Tunnel of Love . It was the first single on the album.

history

Like the entire album, this song was recorded in Springsteen's home studio with members of the E Street Band between January and May 1987.

The text shows a confession of self-doubt on the part of the singer. The emotions in the song are confusion, jealousy, and fear that the singer's wife became a stranger to him. The song addresses the masks that people wear and the bitterness that arises when you realize the darkness that can lie behind these masks. The singer struggles to get things right, but fails. He can neither trust himself nor his wife. Both continue to play their roles, he plays the faithful man and she the loving woman, yet the singer is eaten away by self-doubt.

The song was also released on the album The Tunnel of Love .

Music video

Directed by Meiert Avis.

The video effectively reflects the emotions of the song. The singer is sitting uncomfortably on the corner of a chair. While he sings, he plays the guitar and looks straight into the camera without looking away.
