Eduard Demetz (born March 2, 1958 in Bozen , South Tyrol , Italy ), also Edoardo Demetz , is an Italian composer and conductor .

biography

Eduard Demetz studied piano with Michaela Schneider-Cuvay and orchestral conducting with Ulrich Weder at the Mozarteum in Salzburg . In addition, he completed master classes and seminars with Gary Bertini , Pierre Boulez , Péter Eötvös and Vinko Globokar . He composed a. a. Works for chamber orchestra, symphony orchestra, choir, piano, piano trio and for various brass ensembles and is also active in the field of music for film, theater and television (for example for Bavaria-Film in Munich). He received various awards for his work. Demetz teaches composition elements for didactics at the Conservatory in Bolzano , is on the artistic advisory board of the “Band for New MusicWindkraft and a member of the Transart Festival for contemporary culture. From 2002 to 2012 he was artistic director of the valgardenamusika festival .

Demetz 'works were u. a. Performed throughout Europe by the soloists Thomas Demenga and Thomas Larcher , the Ensemble Modern , the Ensemble intercontemporain , the Klangforum Wien , the Tyrolean Symphony Orchestra , the Petersen Quartet , the Arditti Quartet , the Tyrolean Landestheater and the Haydn Orchestra from Bozen and Trento. In 2005 Per vidula y tlavier was played by the Merlin Ensemble at the Austrian Cultural Forum in Manhattan . In the same year, a composer focus was dedicated to him in the Merano Music Weeks, with his work Im Klang being premiered by the Linz Bruckner Orchestra under the direction of Dennis Russel Davies. In 2012 a CD was released by ORF containing his works Minus , Ludus tarantulae , Doi , Flying Carpet and Rondo de banda .

On the occasion of the refugee crisis , Demetz organized the musical project Ardadioungo for the opening of the Transart Festival in Museion on September 9, 2015 together with migrants living in Bolzano . In November of that year he won the composition competition announced by the Artemis Quartet with his string quartet broken islands ; the work was premiered by the Artemis Quartet on May 23, 2016 in Berlin.

style

Demetz sees himself influenced by very different styles of music: from classical piano literature, rock from the 1970s or Ladin folk songs. For him, music means communication, because "music wants to be communicative"; he also declared: "Art, music and literature want to be real".
