The city pond is a pond in Kempten (Allgäu) on the federal highway 12 to Buchenberg on the edge of the Stiftallmey district . There used in Kempten a second pond of that name, which was also called summer pond, the village summer in the northeastern district Sankt Mang , a damming the summer Weiher Bach.

The city pond has an area of around five hectares . The significantly smaller Steufzger Weiher is a good 700 meters to the northeast .

The pond used to be part of the water supply in Kempten . It belongs to the system of canals, reservoirs and brooks, which is popularly known as Schlangenbach, and which served to supply the monastery and the imperial city with water. The city pond was laid out in the area of the Kempten monastery as early as 1494 and received its water from the damming of several small springs and the Wildmoosbach in the Allmey (formerly Allmei ) west of Kempten. This damming is the imperial city 1484 by Emperor Friedrich III. Approved. The city had bought the land for it from the former city lord, the prince abbot.

The damming made it possible for the imperial city to regulate its water supply during dry periods.

Current usage

The pond has always been used for fish farming. The current tenant of the town pond is the fishing association of Niedersonthofener See . To the southwest of the pond are today orchards and the allotment garden “Westlicher Stadtweiher”, which was created in 1978. There is a popular walking path all around, which is only partially wheelchair accessible. Beaver tracks can also be observed on the town pond, as on the other bodies of water in Kempten.

In 2013 a discussion arose about the poplar wood artwork “Two Big Hands” by the artist Robert Liebenstein, which was set up at the city pond a good eight years ago after it had been in front of the residence for a few months . The work of art has since been so badly weathered that its stability was endangered. The artist's suggestion to sink one's "hands" into the town pond was not implemented. For this, the "hands" were now laid flat and left to further decay as part of the art project.
