The painting Portrait of the Emperor Maximilian and his Family was painted by the Upper Swabian master Bernhard Strigel after March 24, 1516 and is the only signed picture by him. It is shown in the Vienna Art History Museum .

original

The picture created by the Memmingen painter Bernhard Strigel shows the imperial family of six in one room. All persons can be identified by inscriptions. Emperor Maximilian stands on the left side of the picture, holds his grandson Ferdinand I in his arms and lets his right hand rest on his left upper arm. The ruler's left arm rests on Charles V's shoulder . In the background, Philip the Handsome is shown. He stands behind his mother, Maria of Burgundy, who died in 1482 . Maximilian's grandson-in-law Ludwig II is pictured in front of Maria .

Maximilian and Ferdinand I are pictured in front of a green brocade curtain , while the other four people are standing in front of a landscape. The sky takes up the upper third of the landscape. Maximilian, Philipp and Karl wear a beret , Ferdinand and Ludwig wear a wreath in their hair. With the exception of Ferdinand, everyone wears necklaces. Mary of Burgundy is adorned with a hood and a scarf.

A replica of the painting from the late 18th century is exhibited in the Strigel Museum in the former Antoniterkloster in Memmingen . It contains the compositions typical of Strigel, but without coming close to the original artistically. The colors are partially changed. The people are also shown rather schematically. The replica contains additions that are not on the original, such as an inscription on the parchment scroll held by Ludwig or the rose that Ferdinand is holding in his right hand.
