La Sagra is a mountain and small mountain range in the north of the province of Granada in Spain . The mountain is located in the municipal area of the municipalities of Huéscar and Puebla de Don Fadrique . It forms the highest point of the Sub-Betic , one of the outer zones of the Betic Cordillera on the Altiplano Granadino and rises with a double peak ( La Sagra and La Sagra Chica ) to 2,383 m above sea level .
geology
The mountain consists mainly of limestone and marl , which are particularly evident in the area of the summit. The individual banks are very thick and hard. Deep ravines have dug into the slopes of the mountain. The rock comes from the deposit of carbonate material in a shallow sea. During the Alpidian orogeny about 25 million years ago this material was folded and later lifted out. That is why today one can find fossils of marine animals even on the summit of Sagra .
geography
The flanks of the mountain are wooded halfway up, pine and pine forests predominate here. On the western slope there is a forest path on which you can get to the summit. From there the view extends to the coast of Almería on a clear day . The main European watershed also runs along the mountains.
flora
Black pine ( Pinus nigra subsp. Mauretanica ) dominates at the foot of the mountain up to approx. 1600 m . The undergrowth includes Kermes oak , Genista cinerea , Genista scorpius , Quercus lusitanica , Berberís hispanica , single hawthorn , Crataegus granatensis and common rock pear . Above the tree line there are Platycapnos saxicola , Dwarf Pippau , Phyteuma charmelii , Valeriana globulariifolia , Biscutella sempervirens (= Biscutella laxa ) and Anemone burseriana . Andryala agardhii dominates the rock . An endemic plant is the saxifrage Saxifraga rigoi .
