The 1884 earthquake in Andalusia ( Spanish El terremoto de Andalucía ) was a severe earthquake in the Spanish province of Andalusia . The epicenter was southwest of the southern Spanish city of Granada in Arenas del Rey . The quake occurred on Christmas Day, December 25, 1884 at 9:08 p.m. and had a strength of 6.5 M w on the moment magnitude scale . It shook the southern part of the Granada basin for 20 seconds . The result was 900 dead and over 1,500 injured.
