The Comarca de Alhama is one of the 10 comarcas in the province of Granada . Like all comarcas in the autonomous community of Andalusia , it was established with effect from March 28, 2003.

The comarca in the west of the province comprises 11 municipalities with an area of ​​976 km².

Earthquake 1884

During the earthquake in Andalusia in 1884 , the epicenter was in what is now the comarca.

In Alhama de Granada there were 463 dead, making it the city with the highest number of victims in absolute terms. More than 70% of the houses have collapsed.

The worst hit was Arenas del Rey , where 135 people died. Arenas del Rey and Zafarraya were completely destroyed at that time.
