The Jardín Botánico de La Cortijuela is a 12.4 hectare botanical garden established in 1965 in the Sierra Nevada National Park , managed by the Andalusian government and the University of Granada ; it belongs to the Red Andaluza de Jardines Botánicos. The institution's task is to protect, preserve and research the flora of the Sierra Nevada and the more than 60 endemics that live here .

The park is located in Cerro del Trevenque at an altitude of approx. 1600 m and can be reached on foot or by off-road car from the road that connects Granada with the Sierra Nevada ski station. A converted cortijo (southern Spanish courtyard) serves as a reception and information center ; The facility also has greenhouses for the care of endangered or sensitive plants, including the rare indigenous Narcissus nevadensis .

Various hiking trails lead through the botanical garden, which are also connected to various hiking trails through the Sierra Nevada.

Collections

The Botanical Garden de La Cortijuela is home to various collections of trees , including found species such as the local Scots pine ( Pinus sylvestris subsp. Nevadensis ) and new plantings such as Pinus sylvestris . Plants such as peonies (species Paeonia coriacea ), lavender-leaved sage ( Salvia lavandulifolia ), stinking hellebore ( Helleborus foetidus ) and bearberry ( Arctostaphylos uva-ursi ) are common in the understory .

On the two brooks in the interior of the area you can find field elms next to horse mint ( Mentha longifolia ) and other plants typical of watercourses. Endangered and rare species are cared for in the greenhouse.
