Christoph Hellwig

Christoph Helwig (Senior) (born September 20, 1642 in Anklam ; † May 27, 1690 in Greifswald ) was a German professor of medicine.

Life

He was the son of the Anklam physician Anton Helwig and Hedwig Illies. In 1656 he went to the University of Greifswald , where he lived with Professor Michaelis and heard from Friedrich Monau and Marcus Bernhardinus. In order to be able to read medical texts in the original, he studied the Arabic languages. He heard medical lectures from Johann Heun .

In 1659 Helwig went to Leipzig and heard a. a. with Johannes Michaelis . In 1662 he returned home because of his father's illness. Shortly afterwards his mother died.

Helwig continued his studies in Leyden . In 1663 he traveled to London and brought back a valuable collection of writings. He went to Italy via Paris. End of 1665 he went to Basel , where he in April of the following year for doctoral doctorate . In the same year he returned to Anklam.

In 1667, Helwig received a professorship for medicine in Greifswald. In the same year he married the daughter of Professor Johann Heun , Anna Regina Heune. Helwig had three daughters and five sons with her, u. a. Joachim Andreas Helwig (1677–1736) and Christoph Helwig (1679–1714). His daughter Gertrud Hedwig (1668-1691) married the later superintendent Heinrich Brandanus Gebhardi in 1688 .

In 1669, 1673, 1678 and 1686 he was elected rector of the university. In 1684 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

As a practicing doctor, Helwig u. a. Elector Friedrich Wilhelm of Brandenburg and Duke Gustav Adolf of Mecklenburg .
