Jacob Henning (born May 26, 1633 in Greifswald ; † September 28, 1704 there ) was a German Protestant theologian .

Life

Born as the son of the citizen and eighth man Jacobus Henning and his wife Catharina (née Utessen), he attended the city school in his hometown at an early age . At the age of 18 he went to high school in Stettin and matriculated at the University of Wittenberg at Easter 1653 , where he attended the lectures of Abraham Calov , Johannes Meisner , Andreas Kunad , Johannes Scharff and other university teachers and thus got to know the teaching of Lutheran orthodoxy . Then he went to the University of Frankfurt (Oder) to get to know the dogmatic foundations of the Reformed Church and returned to Greifswald.

He had hardly arrived in Greifswald when his father died. Now he lacked the means to continue his studies outside of Germany, so he attended lectures at the University of Greifswald , among others with Johann Friedrich König, and took over the early sermons at St. Nikolai Cathedral for two years . This made him famous, and in 1659 he was offered the job of steward of the children of the royal war council Johannes von Sparfeld .

He traveled to major cities with the children. In 1663 he continued his studies at the University of Tübingen , where he attended the lectures by Tobias Wagner , Balthasar Raith (1616–1683), Johann Adam Osiander and Christoph Wölfflin (1625–1688). He was housed with the legal scholar Johann Andreas Frommann (1626–1690), who promoted him. After a year and a half he went to the University of Strasbourg , where he attended lectures by Johann Conrad Dannhauer , Sebastian Schmidt , Balthasar Bebel and Johann Heinrich Boecler (1611–1672). He then traveled to France and Italy.

In 1668 he returned from the trip and in January 1669 was appointed professor of ethics at the philosophical faculty of the University of Greifswald. During this time he took an active part in the existence of the Greifswald University, traveled to the Swedish court and took over the office of Rector of the University in 1675 . He did this for two more years, because his successor died in office and the following one moved to Mecklenburg. Since a position at the theological faculty had become vacant in 1676, Henning was appointed associate professor of theology, which he took over on January 12, 1676.

Thereupon the elector Friedrich Wilhelm made him full professor of theology, and he took over the position of pastor at the St. Jacobikirche . On January 1, 1678, he gave his inaugural sermon. In order to acquire the academic degree required for this, he received his doctorate in theology on May 1, 1679 , became assessor at the spiritual consistory in 1680 , was procurator of the university ten times in 1682 and again administered the office of rector of the university in 1685 and 1698.

Henning declined appointments to the University of Rostock, the University of Dropat and as general superintendent in Güstrow. Apart from his academic disputations, nothing was printed by him; on the contrary, he had placed himself in the service of the university and primarily dealt with organizational tasks.

Jacob Henning married Magarethe Claden († May 15, 1702) in 1691, with whom he had no children. Afflicted by a heart attack and scurvy, he died at the age of 71 and was buried in Greifswald on October 20, 1704.
