Mario Luigi Cardinal Ciappi OP (born October 6, 1909 in Florence , Italy , † April 23, 1996 in Rome ) was a Curial Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church and papal house theologian.

Life

After studying Catholic theology and philosophy , Mario Luigi Ciappi received the sacrament of ordination on March 26, 1932 in Rome . He had already joined the Dominican Order in 1925. He then held various functions at the curia . In 1955 he was awarded the title of papal house theologian.

Pope Paul VI appointed Ciappi on June 10, 1977 titular bishop of Misenum . He was ordained bishop on June 18 of the same year by the Cardinal Prefect of the Apostolic Signature , Dino Cardinal Staffa , in the Basilica of Santa Maria sopra Minerva ; Co- consecrators were the then secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith , Curia Archbishop Jean Jérôme Hamer , and the Bishop of Ventimiglia , Angelo Raimondo Verardo . Shortly afterwards, on June 27, 1977, in the last consistory under Paul VI. he was accepted as a cardinal deacon with the title deaconry Nostra Signora del Sacro Cuore in the college of cardinals . He took part in the conclave of August 1978 , which Pope John Paul I elected; also participated in the conclave of October 1978 , which Pope John Paul II elected. On June 22, 1987 he opted for the titular church Sacro Cuore di Gesù agonizzante a Vitinia and was elevated to cardinal priest .

He died in 1996 and was buried in Rome on Campo Verano .
