The Church of Nostra Signora del Sacro Cuore (also called San Giacomo degli Spagnoli ) is a Catholic church dedicated to the Virgin Mary and is located in Piazza Navona in Rome . She is the titular diakonia of Cardinal Koch .

history

The previous church was built in the 12th century on the ruins of the old stadium of Domitian. Today's church was built for the Holy Year 1450 by a commission headed by Infante Heinrich von Kastilien , son of King Ferdinand III. built by Castile . The facade, which was originally on the opposite side, was designed by Bernardo Rossellino .

The church had been the Spanish national church in Rome since 1506 and was mainly used by the Spanish court and Spanish pilgrims. Only after the completion of the church of Santa Maria in Monserrato degli Spagnoli in the 17th century did it take on the role of the Spanish national church.

In the late 19th century, Pope Leo XIII. extensively renovated the building, which was already in danger of falling apart. As part of this renovation work, the main entrance was relocated to the front of Piazza Navona. The apse and transept were demolished in 1938 to make way for the new thoroughfare, Corso del Rinascimento, which ran parallel to Piazza Navona.

Facility

Most of the works of art and funerary monuments were transferred to the church of Santa Maria de Monserrato degli Spagnoli. Some works of the Renaissance have been preserved to this day, including a pulpit in multi-colored marble and the marble wall behind the high altar. The chapel of San Giacomo has also been preserved.
