Jean Jérôme Cardinal Hamer OP (born June 1, 1916 in Brussels , † December 2, 1996 in Rome ) was a Belgian religious and curia cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Jean Jérôme Hamer joined the religious order of the Dominicans in and completed a General Studies in La Sarte and lions . During the Second World War he was a soldier and spent some time in captivity . After further studies, he was at the University of Friborg to the doctor of theology doctorate . On August 3, 1941, he received the sacrament of ordination . From 1944 to 1962 he taught at the University of Freiburg im Üechtland, at times also in Rome and at the Faculty of the Dominicans Le Saulchoir in Étiolles near Paris . From 1962 on, he was the student secretary responsible for the students of his order. From 1962 to 1965 he took part in the Second Vatican Council as an expert on questions of Christian unity . From 1966 he held leadership positions in the Secretariat for Christian Unity .

On June 14, 1973 he was named Titular Archbishop of Lorium and Secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith . Hamer received on June 29 of the same year through Pope Paul VI. the Bishop ordination ; Co-consecrators were the Archbishops of the Curia, Agostino Casaroli and Bernardin Gantin . In early 1979 he attended the Third General Conference of the Latin Episcopate in Puebla.

On April 8, 1984, Pope John Paul II appointed him Pro- Prefect of the Congregation for Religious . On May 25, 1985, Jean Jérôme Hamer was accepted into the College of Cardinals as a cardinal deacon with the title deaconry of San Saba . Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation on January 21, 1992. On January 29, 1996 he was elevated to cardinal priest pro hac vice while retaining his titular church .
