Paul-Pierre Cardinal Philippe OP (born April 16, 1905 in Paris , † April 9, 1984 in Rome ) was a Curia Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Paul-Pierre Philippe entered the Dominican Order in 1926 after finishing school and studied Catholic theology and philosophy in various schools of the order . He received on 6 July 1932, the sacrament of the priesthood and, after further studies from 1935 to 1939 as a lecturer in the formation of priests in Polish Lviv and Rome. During the Second World War he served as an officer in the French army . From 1942 to 1950 he worked as a theology lecturer in France and Italy . In 1950 he founded an institute for spirituality to deepen the spiritual life of seminar leaders and novice masters. In 1953 he founded a similar institution for women, which he headed as director until 1957. From 1951 to 1956 he visited numerous religious orders as an Apostolic Visitator , and from 1955 to 1959 he was Commissioner of the Holy Office .

1959 called him Pope John XXIII. as secretary of the religious congregation , in 1962 he appointed him titular archbishop of Heracleopolis Magna and on September 21, 1962 he donated his episcopal ordination ; Co-consecrators were the Archbishops of the Curia, Francesco Carpino and Pietro Parente . Paul-Pierre Philippe attended the Second Vatican Council from 1962 to 1965 . Pope Paul VI appointed him secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in 1967 and accepted him on March 5, 1973 as a cardinal deacon with the titled deaconry of San Pio V a Villa Carpegna in the college of cardinals . From 1973 to 1980 Paul-Pierre Philippe headed the Congregation for the Eastern Churches as Cardinal Prefect and on November 10, 1978 he was appointed Cardinal Patron of the Order of Malta . In 1983 he was elevated to cardinal priest pro hac vice while retaining his title diakonia .

Paul-Pierre Philippe died on April 9, 1984 in Rome and was buried in the Campo Verano cemetery there.
