Pied stands for a group of animals. The word goes back to the old high German  zepar  ' sacrificial animal ' with the collective prefix ge and thus designates animals that are suitable for a sacrifice. Sheep and goats are primarily meant. The term vermin , which is still in use today, emerged as a demarcation .

The term is found almost exclusively in old, often biblical texts.
