Giacomo Violardo

Giacomo Violardo (born May 10, 1898 in Govone , Province of Cuneo , Piedmont , † January 29, 1978 in Rome ) was an Italian Curial Archbishop and Cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

Violardo studied at the seminary in Alba , but had to interrupt his studies to fight in the Italian army during the First World War. After the war, he finished his seminary studies and studied at the Faculty of Theology in Turin , where he received a licentiate in theology, and at the Pontifical Athenaeum San Apollinare in Rome, from which he graduated with a doctorate in both rights . He was ordained a priest on June 29, 1923 . He then continued his studies at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore , where he obtained a doctorate in law received his doctorate.

From 1928 to 1935 he was professor of moral theology and canon law at the Pontifical Regional Seminary of Pius XI. in Fano . Pope Pius XI appointed him on December 14, 1935, chaplain to His Holiness and on April 23, 1939, Honorary Prelate of His Holiness . Then he taught Canon Law (Book III) at the Pontifical Lateran University until 1964 and also served as Dean of the Faculty of Canon Law . After working as an auditor of the French nunciature from February to July 1938, he joined the Apostolic Signature as a promoter of justice. On July 24, 1954, he became undersecretary of the same. Pope John XXIII appointed him on April 2, 1962 secretary of the Pontifical Commission for the Interpretation of Legal Texts . On January 26, 1965, he became secretary of the Holy Congregation for the Order of the Sacraments . As secretary he was the second highest official of this dicastery after the Cardinal Prefect Benedetto Aloisi Masella .

On February 19, 1966 he was appointed by Pope Paul VI. Appointed titular archbishop pro hac vice of Satafi . The Pope personally donated to him on March 19 of that year in St. Peter's Basilica , the episcopal ordination ; Co- consecrators were Francesco Carpino , Assessor of the Consistorial Congregation , and Ettore Cunial , Auxiliary Bishop in Rome . Paul VI took him on April 28, 1969 as a cardinal deacon with the titled deaconry Sant'Eustachio in the college of cardinals and appointed him cardinal patron of the Order of Malta.

The canon law expert died in January 1978 and was buried in the parish church of his hometown Govone.
