Christian Saalbach
Christian Saalbach (born August 16, 1653 in Schenkenberg ; † January 23, 1713 in Greifswald ) was a German classical philologist , university professor and poet.
Life
Christian Saalbach, who comes from Saxony , studied at the University of Leipzig and the University of Gießen . In 1681 he received a full professorship for 'poetry and eloquence' at the University of Greifswald . He remained a professor here until his death in 1713.
He was also the librarian of the University Library Greifswald and dean of the artist faculty , which later became the philosophical faculty of the Alma Mater . In 1683 he was elected rector of the university.
He wrote numerous recipient-related writings in his field of activity, but also on contemporary religious disputes. In his theological writings he confessed to Protestantism around 1687 in a speech at the funeral of Johannes Colberg . In De conversione judaeorum, addressed to Augustine Balthasar , he took the view that the Jews should be converted. In his essay De affectivos he professes empiricism .
As a casual poet , he wrote a large number of songs, mainly funeral poems ( Epicedia ). He attached great importance to a wealth of forms. In keeping with the times, around two thirds of the works are in Latin and only one third in German . The songs are collected in the University's Vitae Pomeranorum .
When he died, 20 mourning poems were dedicated to him. In one of these poems, Jakob Heinrich von Balthasar praised him as a “highly deserved teacher” and “pillar” and “pillar” of the university.
