history

The Greifswald professors Augustin von Balthasar (1701–1786) and Johann Carl Dähnert (1719–1789) created extensive collections of occasional prints independently of one another in the 18th century. In 1885 the holdings in the Greifswald University Library were combined. In the years that followed, the materials were cataloged and supplemented with some writings from the 19th century. The collection was completed in 1898 and presented to the public for the first time in various publications by the university librarian Edmund Lange.

The collection was kept in 166 volumes in 1898, which were later divided into 178 cassettes. Between the Second World War and the fall of the Wall , 36 cassettes were completely or partially lost. Around 80 percent of the original holdings are still available in the Greifswald University Library. In 2006 the documents were microfilmed so that research no longer has to use the originals.

In a cooperation project with the Herzog-August-Bibliothek in Wolfenbüttel, the prints have been re-cataloged and digitized since 2016.
