Johann Carl Dähnert (born November 10, 1719 in Stralsund , † July 5, 1785 in Greifswald ) was a German librarian , legal scholar , linguist and historian during the Enlightenment .

Life

Johann Carl Dähnert came from a Stralsund merchant family. After attending high school in Stralsund , he went to the University of Greifswald in 1738 , where he also took other subjects in addition to theology . After three semesters, he financed his living through revision courses and as an assistant preacher at Greifswald Cathedral .

In 1743 he became secretary of the Royal German Society of Greifswald , which was founded in 1739, and later also its director (conductor). Between 1743 and 1746 he published the journal “Pommersche Nachrichten”, which he had to print at his own expense from the second year onwards. In this magazine he reported on the Swedish Academy of Sciences and Swedish academic works.

In 1748 he became professor of philosophy and at the same time librarian at the Greifswald University Library , where he introduced a systematic order. From 1750 he published the periodicals "Die Kritische Nachrichten" and "Die Pommersche Bibliothek". In 1758 he took over the newly established chair for Swedish constitutional law and constitution, the university's first modern specialist professorship. He also participated in a magazine published in Stralsund in 1775 under the title “ Pommersches Krämerdütchen ”.

1761 was reconnaissance in the Greifswald Masonic added. Dähnert contributed significantly to the spread of Freemasonry in Swedish Pomerania and remained true to its system of " Strict Observance " until his death.
