Bernhard Christian Otto (born March 6, 1745 in Niepars near Stralsund , † November 5, 1835 in Frankfurt (Oder) ) was a German doctor , naturalist and economist .

Life

Bernhard Christian Otto was a son of Pastor Gotthard Joachim Jacob Otto zu Niepars and his wife Agnese Regina, daughter of Pastor Dionisius Casper Droysen († 1765) zu Dersekow . He studied medicine at the University of Göttingen and received his medical doctorate here in 1771. In 1772 he acquired the license to teach at the Greifswald medical faculty . He was the first to offer lectures on surgery and delivery for midwives and surgeons in Greifswald .

From 1776 he was an adjunct of the medical faculty and offered lectures on natural history. In 1781 he was appointed professor of natural history and economics at the Philosophical Faculty and also taught surgery and obstetrics. In the same year he became head of the botanical garden.

Bernhard Christian Otto went to Frankfurt (Oder) in 1788 as a professor of medicine at the Alma Mater Viadrina and director of the botanical garden . In 1792 he was given the post of professor of medicine Peter Immanuel Hartmann , who died on December 1, 1791 , which was endowed with 1000 Thalers per year. When the university was relocated to Breslau, Otto retired, stayed in Frankfurt, continued research and put together an extensive private library. He was chairman of the Royal Swedish Health College of Pomerania and Rügen and a member of the Natural Research Society of Berlin . Otto translated several natural history treatises from French into German.

He went blind in old age and died of old age at the age of 91.
