Augustin von Balthasar , before 1746: Augustin Balthasar (born May 20, 1701 in Greifswald , † June 20, 1786 in Wismar ) was a German lawyer and scholar in Swedish Pomerania . He is considered an important representative of law in the Age of Enlightenment . As a historian , he compiled extensive material on the history of Pomerania .

Life

Augustin (von) Balthasar was the son of the lawyer at the University of Greifswald Jakob Balthasar and his wife Anna Katharina, nee. Gerdes. In 1704 the father moved with the family to Rostock . After his death in 1706, the mother and the children returned to Greifswald. There his older brother Jakob Heinrich exercised a significant influence on his education. After attending school, Augustin Balthasar studied history and philosophy in Greifswald in 1718 , then law at the University of Jena . In 1724 he went on a study trip that took him through Thuringia, the Rhine region and the Netherlands .

On his return to Greifswald he became in 1726 the licentiate of the rights doctorate . 1727 habilitation he become the adjunct law school. At the same time he was syndic of the university. In 1730 he received his doctorate and from 1734 taught institutions , pandects , canon and feudal law as a full professor . In 1735 he became an assessor of the faculty and in 1736 resigned his offices as adjunct and syndic. In 1737, 1745 and 1753 he was elected rector of the college.

The Teutsche Gesellschaft zu Greifswald , of which he was a co-founder, elected him in 1740 as its director. From 1743 he was assessor, later also president of the Greifswald consistory . In 1746 he and his brothers Jakob Heinrich, Georg Nikolaus and Johann Gustav were raised to the hereditary nobility by means of an imperial diploma . In 1763 he was appointed as assessor at the Wismar tribunal , of which he was vice-president from 1778 until his death. In 1781 he was made a knight of the Royal Swedish North Star Order .

Fonts

Augustin von Balthasar wrote numerous papers on local legal history and canon law. He has also published works on the history of Greifswald University. His extensive collections on the history of Pomerania take up the bulk of his surviving manuscripts and form a decisive part of the Greifswald " Vitae Pomeranorum ".
