Christian Stephan Scheffel (born October 12, 1693 in Meldorf , † July 16, 1760 in Greifswald ) was a German medic and botanist .

Life

Christian Stephan Scheffel was the son of the Wismar doctor Martin Scheffel (1659–1754). He studied from 1714 to 1718 at the University of Kiel , then at the University of Leipzig and finally in Leiden . There he received his doctorate in 1721 under Herman Boerhaave . He went to Wismar, where he worked as a general practitioner, until he accepted an appointment at the University of Greifswald in 1726 . As a doctor and professor of medicine, he wrote more than 40 medical papers. Between 1730 and 1754 he was rector of the university five times.

Scheffel carried out anatomical and especially botanical studies, for which he made his private garden available. The establishment of a public botanical garden failed for lack of money. Instead, he acquired the herbarium laid out by Monau and Helwig, which he intended, together with his own collections, for the botanical garden planned for the new university building in 1750.

In addition, he dealt with the life stories of medical professors. As early as 1727 he published a book about the Kiel doctor and botanist Günther Christoph Schelhammer . On the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the university's founding, his work “Vitae professorum medicinae” was published.

Scheffel died in 1760 and was buried in a burial chapel in St. Nikolai Cathedral, which he had acquired together with Johannes Lembke . He bequeathed 760 volumes of medical writings to the Greifswald University Library . He also determined in his will the foundation of the so-called Scheffel scholarship , which he wanted to endow with 4,000 thalers. However, his heirs challenged the will and agreed with the rector Johann Carl Dähnert on an amount of 1000 thalers.
