Tobias Wagner (born February 21, 1598 in Heidenheim , † August 12, 1680 in Tübingen ) was a Württemberg Lutheran theologian.

Life

Tobias Wagner went in 1607 to the Latin School Nördlingen , 1611 at the Latin School Heidenheim, to the convent schools in Kloster Adelberg and Maulbronn Monastery and enrolled later, on July 7, 1619 at the University of Tuebingen . On December 27, 1620 he was Baccalaureus and on February 19, 1623 Magister artium. From 1624 to 1653 he was a deacon and pastor in Esslingen am Neckar . On May 13, 1635 he received his doctorate in theology in Tübingen. After decades of pastoral service, Wagner took over the second theological professorship at the University of Tübingen on July 4, 1653. In 1662 he was appointed to the first theological professorship and was also chancellor.

In 1654/55 Wagner was rector of the university. Wagner participated in the rebuilding of the Tübingen theological faculty after the Thirty Years War. As a theologian he was one of the most controversial representatives of Lutheranism in the seventeenth century. In the age of polemics, Wagner not only did not avoid the dispute, "he stirred it up, among colleagues and other scholars, so that as Chancellor he had to be put off three times by the dukes, and he was once confiscated a book."

Wagner was so prone to confrontation in confessional matters that a visitation recess of 1675 attributed the decline in the number of Tübingen students to the theological dispute. Wagner, like Johann Adam Osiander, advocated a dogmatically clearly fixed Lutheranism and criticized early Enlightenment currents in Protestant theology. Wagner only took part in the antiatheist controversy of the time late. He saw the root of "atheism" primarily in the decline in authority of the Holy Scriptures.

Wagner advised extreme determination in the fight against the atheists, as they supposedly wanted to destroy Christianity. Theologically, Wagner also fought against the supposedly pantheistic arguments of the opponents. For this purpose, the proof of the finiteness of the world was made, whereby a reference to "nature" as the cause of creation should be excluded. Wagner did not take part in the Spinoza criticism, unlike - albeit only in the 1680s and 1690s - Christian Kortholt , Immanuel Weber , Johann Petrus Grünenberg and Johann Franz Budde .
