Balthasar Bebel (also: Boeblius, Bebelius ; * October 28, 1632 in Strasbourg ; † October 2, 1686 in Wittenberg ) was a German Lutheran theologian .

Life

Balthasar Bebel was the son of Balthasar Bebel, Weissbeck, and Susanna Rheinthaler. He was baptized in St. Nicolaus Church.

Bebel studied at the University of Leipzig , where he obtained a master's degree. On April 20, 1658, he moved to the University of Wittenberg , where he was accepted on March 2, 1659 as an adjunct in the Faculty of Philosophy. In 1661 he returned to his native Strasbourg, where he became a preacher at the Strasbourg Cathedral . At the University of Strasbourg he was initially professor of antiquities and in 1662, after receiving his doctorate in theology, he became professor at the theological faculty. He turned down many offers to fill other apprenticeships. On February 18, 1662, he married Salome Thürmann, born January 11, 1646 in Gries , Amt Brumath , County Hanau-Lichtenberg , daughter of Andreas Thürmann, pastor of Geudertheim, and Anna Barbara Dannhauer in Strasbourg Cathedral .

Only when he was offered the successor of the then most important Lutheran Orthodox theologian Abraham Calov on April 20, 1685 in Wittenberg , did he accept it and on September 29 began his service as pastor at the Wittenberg town church , professor of theology and general superintendent of the Saxon spa district record. However, he was not able to carry out this activity for long, as he suffered a stroke on October 2nd while giving a sermon in the town church .
