Andreas Kunad

Andreas Kunad, also: Kunadus (* August 5, 1602 in Döbeln ; † March 15, 1662 in Wittenberg ) was a German educator and Lutheran theologian.

Life

Born as the son of Döbelner council chamberlain Andreas Kunad and his wife Sibylla (née Wallrich), he received his first education at the city school in his hometown. Because of his achievements, the council of the town of Döbeln sent him to the Pforta State School , where he was accepted as an alumnus in 1618. Both parents died during his school days, but after six years he started studying at the University of Leipzig . He was able to manage this study despite the financial difficulties.

The related theologian Mauritius Burchard initially granted him free board and lodging for a year. After a year, through the intercession of Professor Johann Höpner , he received an electoral scholarship and he also earned money for his living in a book printing company. Kunad later took on several positions as private tutor and received a baccalaureate at the philosophical faculty after just one year. After earning a master's degree in 1628, he held lectures and organized disputations. These were well attended, especially since Kunad was engaged in theology as well as philosophical studies.

In 1630 he went to the Pforta State School as vice-principal , where he was introduced on July 16. After Elias Ehinger went to Augsburg, Kunad took over his position as rector in June 1632. During his time in Pforta, connections with Leipzig were maintained, where he was appointed a licentiate in theology in 1635 by the Leipzig theology professor Heinrich Höpner . In 1638 Kunad was appointed superintendent in Leisnig and in 1640 moved to Grimma in the same position . He stayed in Grimma for twelve years and during the Thirty Years' War was able to prevent Hans Christoph von Königsmarck from carrying out the cremation of the city that had been decided upon. This earned him respect in the population of Grimma, so that he felt quite comfortable there.

In 1652 a position as professor of theology at the University of Wittenberg became vacant. On October 9th Kunad occupied the fourth professorship in theology, became assessor at the Wittenberg consistory and took over the administration of the electoral scholarships. During his ten years at the University of Wittenberg, he held the office of dean of the theological faculty five times and was twice rector of the university in the fall semesters of 1554 and 1660.

After a severe fever attacked him on March 2, 1662, he died on March 15, 1662 after a long period of sickness and was buried in the churchyard of the town church in Wittenberg. In his honor, an epitaph was supposedly erected at the Wittenberg town church, but it was no longer there in 1896.
