Johann Höpner (born February 22, 1582 in Roßwein , † July 4, 1645 in Leipzig ) was a German Lutheran theologian.

Life

Johann Höpner came from a bourgeois family respected in Saxony, Thuringia and Austria. He was born in Roßwein in 1582 as the son of the then rector of the school in Roßwein and later deacon in Döbeln Paul Höpner († 1593) and his wife Anna, daughter of the citizen in Oschatz Johann Wirckner. Prepared by his father, he attended school in Döbeln, and at that time he was particularly dedicated to music. After his father's death, he received an educational qualification in 1596 at the electoral state school in Pforta, thanks to the advocacy of the Döbelner council . Here was one of Jerome Kromayer the Elder (1572-1613) to his supporters. He was enrolled at the University of Leipzig in the winter semester of 1599 . There he took up a study of the philosophical sciences in 1602, advanced to a Baccalaureus in 1603 and was instructed by Petrus Meuderlinus (also: Rupert Messenius ; 1582-1651) on January 24, 1605, Master of Philosophy.

After completing his philosophical studies, he began studying theological sciences. Equipped with an electoral scholarship, he attended the lectures of Burkhard Harbart (1546–1614) and Zacharias Schilter (1541–1606) for almost six years . In addition, he took over the position of private tutor for the sons of Theodor Möstel (1564–1626). Funded by Möstel, he received a subdiaconate at the Leipzig Nikolaikirche in 1610 . He continued his theological studies and was admitted to the theological faculty on July 17, 1613 as a baccalaureus. In 1614 he became a deacon at the Nikolaikirche. He was promoted to theological licentiate on September 18, 1617 , held private lectures at the theological faculty and in 1618 became an associate professor of theology.

In 1619 he switched to the St. Thomas Church as a deacon , rose to archdeacon in 1621 , became a full fourth professor in 1624, and third professor in 1628, and was associated with it as senior pastor at the Nikolaikirche and canon of the Merseburg monastery . He then received his doctorate in theology on August 8, 1628, and in 1633 became superintendent of Leipzig. He was also a member of the small prince's college , assessor at the Leipzig consistory , decemvir of the university and canon of the monastery in Meissen . In 1642 he became a senior in the theological faculty and the Meissen Nation. Höpner also took part in the organizational tasks of the Leipzig University. He was dean of the theological faculty in 1631, 1634, 1637, 1640, 1642 and rector of the alma mater in the winter semester of 1631 .

He suffered from scurvy and swelling of his thighs and died of a heart attack. He was buried on July 10th in the Nikolaikirche in Leipzig.
