At the same time he formed the fusion band Auracle with other Eastman students like John Serry , with which he impressed at the Notre Dame Collegiate Jazz Festival . The group recorded two critically acclaimed albums for Chrysalis Records in 1978 and 1979, and toured Europe as well. Since 1982 he has been part of the Chick Corea quintet ( The Joburg Sessions ); As a duo, he and Corea recorded a highly acclaimed album for ECM Records in 1984, Voyage .

Over the next few years, Kujala developed the technique for the Böhm flute to merge notes (so-called fretless flute ), which he highlighted in pieces such as the fretless flute song and the album Fresh Flute ( Columbia Records 1986). He increasingly focused on studio work in Los Angeles, played solo in musicals such as The Lion King and became piccolo flutist of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra , but released other albums under his name.
