Klaus Suonsaari

Klaus Suonsaari (born November 7, 1959 in Helsinki ) is a Finnish jazz drummer.

Suonsaari had piano lessons from the age of six before switching to drums at the age of fourteen. In 1974 he attended summer courses at the Helsinki Pop-Jazz Conservatory, after which he began training as a classical drummer at the Lahti Conservatory. He then attended the Eastman School of Music in Rochester and studied from 1979 at Berklee College of Music . He also took private lessons from Joe Hunt and Alan Dawson .

At the age of sixteen Suonsaari became a member of the jazz quintet Blue Train , with whom he gained practical experience at the Pori International Jazz Festival and on tours through Finland. In 1984 he wrote the Suite for Bill for the orchestra of Niels Lan Doky (in memory of the pianist Bill Evans ).

In 1992 he was named Artist of the Year in Finland at the Pori Jazz Festival. In New York he founded the record label KSJazz . He toured u. a. through the USA, Canada, France, Switzerland and Scandinavia and worked with musicians such as Bob Berg , Horace Parlan , Joe Lovano , Slide Hampton , Jerry Bergonzi , Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen , Junior Cook , Tom Harrell , Ray Drummond and Muhal Richard Abrams .

As a sideman and / or producer he worked on albums and the like. a. the Cello Acustics , by LaVerne Butler , Pirjo Hirvonen , Bobby Short and Scott Robinson . He also released a number of his own albums.
