The Cookers
The Cookers are an American jazz band.
Organized by trumpeter David Weiss and named after Freddie Hubbard's Blue Note album from 1965, the all-stars band has been made up of jazz veterans since June 2007, whose members were born in the 1930s and 1940s, such as the tenor saxophonist Billy Harper , trumpeter Eddie Henderson , alto saxophonist Craig Handy , pianist George Cables , bassist Cecil McBee and drummer Billy Hart . At times Bennie Maupin , James Spaulding , Stanley Cowell , Kirk Lightsey , Victor Lewis , Dwayne Burno and Gene Jackson also belonged to the ensemble. In 2009 the ensemble made a guest appearance at the Burghausen Jazz Week .
In 2010 the debut album Warriors was created , followed by Cast the First Stone and Believe , mostly with original compositions by the band members. 2016 included Billy Harper, George Cables, Eddie Henderson, David Weiss, Cecil McBee and Billy Hart Donald Harrison ; the album The Call of the Wild and Peaceful Heart was created .
In 2015 the band received the award for the best jazz group in the “Rising Star” category in the Down Beat critics polls .
