Bennie Maupin
Bennie Maupin (born August 29, 1940 in Detroit , Michigan ) is an American jazz saxophonist , clarinetist and flutist.
Maupin attended the Detroit Institute for Musical Arts . In 1963 he went to New York City , where he performed with bands under Marion Brown , Pharoah Sanders and Chick Corea . From 1966 to 1968 he was a member of Roy Haynes' band , then until 1969 that of Horace Silver . He has also made recordings with McCoy Tyner (1968), Chick Corea ( "Is" Sessions , 1969), Lee Morgan (1970), Freddie Hubbard , Jack DeJohnette , Andrew Hill , Eddie Henderson and Woody Shaw .
His participation as bass clarinetist on Miles Davis ' album Bitches Brew attracted a lot of attention . After working with Davis, he became a member of the sextet of Herbie Hancock , who took him over to his band The Headhunters in 1973 . He also recorded several albums as a band leader. He currently lives alternately in southern Poland and Los Angeles and directs The Bennie Maupin Ensemble , with whom he recorded the album Penumbra .
Maupin describes Eric Dolphy as one of his most important influences as a clarinetist .
