Michael Stephans

Michael Stephans (born June 9, 1945 ) is an American jazz musician ( drums , composition ) of modern jazz and a university teacher.

Live and act

Stephans holds Masters degrees in English and in Education, as well as a Ph.D. in education. As a jazz musician, he has worked with Cal Tjader , with whom the first recordings were made in 1974, since the 1970s , and with musicians such as Bob Brookmeyer , Bob Florence , Bennie Maupin , Dave Liebman , Uri Caine , Pharoah Sanders , Charlie Byrd , Bobby Bradford , Buddy Collette , Alan Broadbent , Ralph Bowen , Scott Colley , Bud Shank , John Patitucci , Larry Gelb , Frank Strazzeri , Don Menza and as session musicians with The Rolling Stones , Cher and David Bowie . In addition, he received composition commissions from the Arts and the Percussive Arts Society . The work Shapes and Visions for the vibraphonist Karl Berger was created for a large ensemble , which was performed in the Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC. Under his own name he recorded the albums OM / ShalOM (Endemik Records, with David Liebman, Uri Caine, Jay Anderson ) and Nomads in 2007 , the latter in a duo with David Liebman (ITM Records). In 2012 the production Open Spaces (Lunazure Records) followed. In the field of jazz he was involved in 22 recording sessions between 1973 and 2017. Stephans is currently leading the Oblique Quartet , which in 2019 will include David Liebman, Marc Copland and John Hébert .

Stephans continued to work as a poet, author and jazz journalist. Experiencing Jazz: A Listener's Companion was most recently published by Scarecrow Press. Stephans currently teaches creative writing at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania .
