Matt Chertkoff

Matt Chertkoff (* around 1985 in Livingston (New Jersey) ) is an American modern jazz musician ( guitar ) .

Matt Chertkoff, who comes from a Jewish-Russian emigrant family, grew up in Ridgewood and had music lessons from the age of seven; at eleven he learned to play the guitar. He attended Ridgewood High School in New Jersey and then studied at the University of Miami . Since the mid-2000s he has worked in the New York jazz scene a. a. with Cecil Brooks III ( Hot Dog , 2007), Craig Handy & 2nd Line Smith, with whom he also performed in Germany. Recordings were also made with Adam Scone, Jordan Young ( Jazz Jukebox ) and with the John Colianni Sextet ( I Never Knew , 2018). He also accompanied the singer Joshua Nelson, who sings Jewish songs in gospel style .

Chertkoff was also active as a composer for the film Pisser by Peter Blag (2006). Chertkoff also played in a trio with Kyle Koehler (organ) and Vince Ector ; he has also performed with veterans such as Houston Person and Jimmy Cobb . With his own quartet he also played interpretations of Jewish liturgical and secular melodies . He currently (2019) leads a quintet that includes Craig Handy, Adam Birnbaum , Sean Conly and Chris Beck .
