Atonement Cross Kirchfahrorf
The atonement cross in Kirchfahorf is a listed atonement cross in the district of Kirchfahorf in the town of Bad Dürrenberg in Saxony-Anhalt . In the local register of monuments it is listed as a monument under registration number 094 20739 .
General
The atonement cross is located on Kirchdorfer Ring near the church and is 58 centimeters high, 39 centimeters wide and 20 centimeters thick. Next to the atonement cross is a memorial plaque with the inscription Here, two peasants unknown by name were beheaded in 1525 . Atonement crosses are usually a sign of repentance on the part of the perpetrators, but in this case a memorial for the two killed is more likely. It is almost certain that the two beheaded were denied a funeral in the cemetery.
history
The atonement cross was erected in 1525 to commemorate a cruel execution typical of the time . During the year 1525, the German Peasants' War shook central Germany severely. The struggle of the peasants against the military superiority of the aristocratic houses was unequal and examples were repeatedly made as a deterrent . The two beheaded here are said to have been leaders of the peasant rioters in the northeastern uprising area. The area around Leipzig was hit by the uprisings after April 30, 1525 and was slightly isolated from the rest of the uprising area. In the Vulpiusschen Chronicle of 1700 the two stones are mentioned. It says there that Hans von Thune, the princely captain, had two farmers beheaded in Kirchdorf and three in Spergau , and that pitchforks and axes were engraved on the stones. It is also said that they were buried on the roads .
