Jerome Jennings (born October 28, 1980 in Cleveland , Ohio ) is an American jazz musician ( drums ) and music teacher.

Live and act

Jennings took an early interest in drums; he came to jazz through an album by Art Blakey . In high school, he played in various ensembles before receiving a scholarship to study at Ohio State University , where he had lessons with Pharez Whitted , and then moved to Rutgers University (Mason Gross School for the Performing Arts, graduated in 2004). He obtained his master's degree from the Juilliard School in 2007 , where he received the Morse Fellowship Scholarship. Under Phil Schaap as tutor, he continued his studies at Lincoln Center , where he has been Resident Director of the Juilliard Jazz Orchestra since 2017 .

From the early 2000s he worked in the New York jazz scene with former musicians from Art Blakeys Jazz Messengers such as Charles Fambrough , Curtis Fuller , Benny Golson , David Schnitter , Ronnie Mathews , Javon Jackson , Curtis Lundy , Wynton Marsalis , Lonnie Plaxico , Valery Ponomarev , Bobby Watson and Frank Lacy , also with the formation Brooklyn Soul Organization , with which the first recordings were made, also with Sean Jones , Jason Marshall , Steve Hudson , Sonny Rollins ( Holding the Stage: Road Shows, Vol. 4 , 2016) , Joe Baione , Ernestine Anderson ( Live at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola ), Houston Person , Paula West , Sarah Manning , Jon Burr , Shunzo Ohno and Jazzmeia Horn . Around 2010 he recorded the trio album Socialized Improvisation with Mike Noordzy (bass) and Anthony Ware (alto saxophone) . In January 2016 Jennings recorded his debut album The Beast (Iola) with Sean Jones (trumpet), Dion Tucker (trombone), Howard Wiley (tenor saxophone), Christian Sands (piano) and Christian McBride (bass) . In the field of jazz he was involved in 26 recording sessions from 2004 to 2017.

Jennings also teaches at the Jazz At Lincoln Center in the Jazz for Young People (JFYP) program, at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center and at the Lincoln Center as director of the JALCYO ( Jazz At Lincoln Center Youth Orchestra ). In 2017 he was nominated for the JJA Awards of the Jazz Journalists Association in the category Up and Coming Musician .
