Pharez Whitted

Pharez Whitted (* in Indianapolis ) is an American soul jazz - trumpeter , composer , music producer , and professor.

Pharez Whitted is the son of the singer Virtue Hampton Whitted (1922-2007) and a nephew of Slide Hampton . He grew up in Indianapolis and studied at DePauw University before earning a Masters from Indiana University . He began his musical career in 1982, touring with Bobby Broom and throughout his career worked with Wynton and Branford Marsalis , John Mellencamp , Slide Hampton, The Temptations , The O'Jays , Lou Rawls , Ramsey Lewis and Elvin Jones ; In 2008 he performed at the Jazz Kitchen in Indianapolis. With the Motown Jazz label MoJazz , for which he also worked as a producer, he released two albums under his own name. He is now director of the Jazz Studies division at Chicago State University .
