Shunzo Ohno
Shunzo Ohno ( Japanese 大野 俊 三 , Ōno Shunzō ; born March 22, 1949 in Gifu Prefecture ) is a Japanese fusion and jazz trumpeter .
Live and act
Ohno first learned the trombone and switched to the trumpet at the age of 17. In the late 1960s he rose to become one of the most sought-after jazz trumpeters in Japan. From 1968 he played in the band of the alto saxophonist Keiichiro Ebihara (Keiichiro Ebihara and his Lobsters), in the groups Sound Limited , Soul Media and in the quintet of drummer George Otsuka . In the early 1970s he was a member of Art Blakeys Jazz Messengers . In 1972 his first record was released in Japan. In 1973 he moved to New York and subsequently recorded with Norman Connors , Masabumi Kikuchi and Roy Haynes, among others . Further albums under his own name followed (e.g. Bubbles 1975 with his composition of the same name). a. Marcus Miller , Carter Jefferson, and Onaje Allan Gumbs contributed. He recorded several albums with Gil Evans in the 1980s , was involved in a David Byrne record ( Rei Momo , 1989), recorded with Machito in 1982 , performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival , and toured with Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter . In 1989 he played the album Something More with Buster Williams , Wayne Shorter, Al Foster and Herbie Hancock . A lip injury from a car accident and cancer halted his career in the 1990s.
