Jonny King

John "Jonny" King (* 1965 in New York City ) is an American jazz pianist , author and lawyer .

Jonny King began to play the piano at the age of new and took an interest in jazz at an early age under the influence of the music of Earl Hines and Teddy Wilson . As a teenager he made a few appearances in New York clubs. In the early 1980s he studied with Tony Aless and Mulgrew Miller and briefly had the opportunity to play with Art Blakey . Then King worked with musicians from the cooperative The Young Lions , went on tour with his college friend Joshua Redman and played with the formation Out of the Blue and u. a. with Christian McBride , Bobby Watson , Kenny Garrett , Vincent Herring , Roy Hargrove and Joe Lovano . Jonny King also worked as a composer and recorded with Vincent Herring, Billy Drummond, Josua Redman, Steve Wilson , Peter Washington , Larry Grenadier and David Sánchez three albums under his own name for the labels Criss Cross (1994) and Enja (1995/97) . Currently (2018) he works in a trio with Steve Nelson (vibraphone) and Gerald Cannon (bass).

In addition to his musician career, King graduated from Princeton and Harvard Law School and has worked as a copyright lawyer ever since. He was also active as a writer and wrote the book What Jazz Is , which deals with the New York jazz scene around 1997 and specifically the Young Lions .
