Gerald Leon Cannon (* 15. March 1958 in Racine , Wisconsin ) is an American jazz - bassist .

Cannon gained his first musical experience in a gospel group ; at the age of nine he started playing the bass guitar . He had his first lessons with his father, a guitarist; he later studied at the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse, where he met Milt Hinton on a course in 1978 , which prompted him to switch to the double bass. From 1978 to 1982 he studied at the Wisconsin Music Conservatory in Milwaukee . He began his career locally while accompanying singer Penny Goodwin.

He then moved to New York City in 1983 , played briefly with Art Blakeys Jazz Messengers , Phillip Harper and James Williams . In 1996 he returned to Milwaukee, where he accompanied guest musicians such as Dexter Gordon , Cedar Walton and Mose Allison . Buddy Montgomery brought him back to New York to play in his duo at the Parker Meridian Hotel in 1989/90.

In the early 1990s, Cannon worked with his own sextet in Milwaukee; he also taught at the local conservatory. Back in New York, he accompanied the singer Andy Bey , played with Roy Hargrove from 1994 and with Frank Foster from 1997 . In 1997 he took lessons from Buster Williams and Ray Brown . In 1998 he played with Anthony Wonsey / Nicholas Payton , 1999 with Ralph Peterson , 2002 with Jeremy Pelt , 2003 with Wayne Escoffery and in 2004 in the trio of Ralph Peterson with pianist Rick Germanson . In 2008 he toured with Gary Bartz in the McCoy Tyner quartet ; In 2014 he played in the Joe Farnsworth Quartet, in 2019 in the Duane Eubanks Quintet and in the Justin Robinson Quartet.
