Dan Fogelberg, 1974

Daniel Grayling "Dan" Fogelberg (born August 13, 1951 in Peoria , Illinois ; † December 16, 2007 in Deer Isle , Maine ) was an American singer, composer and multi-instrumentalist. His musical roots lay in country music , folk music , pop and rock music . To this day, he is considered an outstanding and influential singer-songwriter in recent American music history.

Fogelberg was married three times, but his marriages remained childless.

life and career

Dan Fogelberg was the youngest of three sons of Lawrence Fogelberg and his wife Margaret (née Young). His father was the head of a school band at Peoria Woodruff High School and Pekin High School and later inspired one of his most famous titles, Leader of the Band . His mother was a pianist. After getting a Hawaiian guitar from his grandfather , he taught himself to play the guitar, as well as to play the piano. At the age of 14 he already belonged to a music group (The Clan). Between 1967 and 1971 he wrote a number of titles that were released on samplers at a folk music club "The Red Herring" in Urbana, Illinois or in part by other artists, including bands such as "Bucyrus Erie" and "The Coachmen" of which he was a member.

Another interest was painting. After graduating from Woodruff High School in 1969, Fogelberg studied theater arts and painting at the University of Illinois, but continued to make music there. In 1971 he was discovered by Irving Azoff , who later also managed the Eagles and REO Speedwagon . Both traveled to California to try their luck there. Fogelberg became a session musician, played in the opening act for Van Morrison and quickly became part of the local music scene around artists such as Linda Ronstadt , the Eagles, JD Souther and Jackson Browne . His first album Home Free in 1972 received only a muted response, but his second work Souvenirs, produced by guitarist Joe Walsh , with the single hit Part of the Plan in 1974 brought the breakthrough. The following albums were also successful, and Fogelberg was briefly traded as a possible new band member of the Eagles. In 1978 he worked for the first time with the jazz flutist Tim Weisberg .

After many more hits and ten-fold platinum status on his first six albums, things calmed down for the musician in the mid-1980s. He devoted himself increasingly to different musical styles on his later albums and dealt with environmental issues or the rights of Native Americans in his songs. His fan base remained loyal to the singer-songwriter and provided Fogelberg with full concert halls until his last tour in summer 2003.

In 2001, the renowned guitar company C. F. Martin & Co. Fogelberg built a limited signature model in honor of the Martin D-41DF Dan Fogelberg Signature Edition Model .

Fogelberg's hobbies were skiing and deep sea sailing . Since 1982 he has lived part of the year in seclusion on a ranch with its own recording studio in Colorado, most recently with his third wife, the musician Jean Meyer-Fogelberg. But the couple had another residence on the coast of the US state of Maine. In May 2004 he was diagnosed with prostate cancer . Although the disease was temporarily stopped with hormone therapy, Fogelberg died in December 2007 of his recurring cancer.

Late honors

In May 2017, Fogelberg's third wife, musician and painter Jean Marie Mayer-Fogelberg, together with manager Irving Azoff, published previously unpublished recordings of a solo concert from 1979 under the title Dan Fogelberg - Live at Carnegie Hall. In August 2017 Dan Fogelberg posthumously inducted into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame . In September 2017, a musical entitled "Part of the Plan" with Fogelberg's music premiered at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center (TPAC) in Nashville . As a tribute to and in memory of Folgelberg's music, a tribute album, A Tribute To Dan Fogelberg , was released the following November , which featured prominent colleagues such as the Eagles , Garth Brooks , Donna Summer , Michael McDonald , The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band , Vince Gill starred with Amy Grant , Boz Scaggs and Jimmy Buffett and each played one of his songs.
