Thirteen (mostly written Th1rt3en , English for: "Thirteen" or "Dre1z3hn") is the thirteenth studio album by the US thrash metal band Megadeth . It is the first album since The World Needs a Hero (2001) to be recorded with co-founder Dave Ellefson . It is also the first Megadeth album to have more than twelve tracks.

Emergence

After the band separated from bassist James LoMenzo in early 2010, after settling various disputes with bandleader Dave Mustaine, the founding member and David Ellefson, who was bassist until the band split up in 2001, joined Megadeth again after three albums without his participation then immediately recorded the first song after his re-entry. The Grammy- nominated "Sudden Death", which served as the soundtrack for the game Guitar Hero : Warriors of Rock, should not only stand for Ellefson's re-entry, but due to its great success and the musical connection to the previous album Endgame, it was also the opener of her thirteenth studio album which should be called "Th1rt3en", as Mustaine announced in August. In addition, it became known quite early that their new album would also contain newly recorded versions of older, unfinished songs, such as Millennium of the Blind and New World Order , which were already released as demo versions on the new release of Youthanasia in 2004, on the other hand Black Swan , which was included as a bonus track on some pre-ordered United Abominations albums just four years earlier .

When asked about the name Th1r3ten , Mustaine said it contained the title for several reasons. On the one hand, of course, because it was their thirteenth album, on the other hand, he started playing guitar at the age of thirteen and was born on September 13th. Numerous allusions to the 13 can be found in the album, starting with the thirteen candles that can be seen on the cover, through the total of thirteen songs on the album to exactly thirteen undead on each double page of the booklet. When asked about the album's title track, "13", Mustaine said in an interview that the song is about Megadeth being a band and not a solo project. This impression came about because Mustaine is a difficult person and his band constellations didn't always last long. That is the reason why he is the only founding member to be with us continuously and the band was nicknamed "Megadave".

Music genre

Stylistically, the album can be roughly classified into the Countdown to Extinction and Cryptic Writings era, with the new recordings of older songs occasionally representing musical directions from other albums. While Never Dead is reminiscent of the Peace Sells ... era, for example , and Deadly Nightshade was originally created during the Youthanasia album recordings , Sudden Death sounds a lot like the previous album Endgame from 2009, whose musical direction is not continued overall, contrary to the very early ones Announcements that the new album would go in the same direction.

Rock Hard's Michael Rensen said that no Megadeth album has been this good in a long time. He also praised the production of Johnny K, saying it was "light years better than the anemic Andy Sneap shredder of the last MEGADETH CDs". He awarded 8.5 out of a possible 10 points. Michael Edele from Laut.de called Thirteen a varied album, the songs of which would cover the highlights of Megadeth's entire career. He awarded four stars out of five.
