Endgame (English for: " Endspiel ") is the twelfth studio album by the US thrash metal band Megadeth . It was released on Roadrunner Records in September 2009 . It is the first Megadeth album with Chris Broderick on guitar. Musically it was seen in the tradition of heavier Megadeth albums like Rust in Peace as well as more recent releases like The System Has Failed .

Emergence

Before the endgame recordings , guitarist Glen Drover separated. According to front man Dave Mustaine , this was due to health problems and his desire to spend more time with his family. At the suggestion of Glen and his brother Shawn Drover , the band's drummer, Chris Broderick (previously with Nevermore and Jag Panzer ) was signed. Mustaine has compiled the songs on Endgame from his song and riff archive, which he maintains . This included both old ideas and new material. A song was recorded, but since it had no finished vocals, it was not put on the album. The recordings took place until May 2009 in the band's own studio "Vic's Garage", named after the "mascot" of the band Vic Rattlehead, with Andy Sneap . The album was mixed by Sneap in the Backstage Studios in Belper in Derbyshire in England . The song Head Crusher became the first single on the album, followed in February 2010 by The Right to Go Insane . The album debuted at number 9 on the Billboard 200 after its September release .

Mustaine said about the record:

“The album is a lot more aggressive and faster than anything I've done in recent years. 'Endgame' is probably our best record since 'Rust in Peace'. "

- Dave Mustaine.

Texts

According to Dave Mustaine, the title piece is about a decree by George W. Bush , in which the latter authorized the authorities to “lock large parts of the population in closed facilities in a national emergency” with “vague” reasons. Mustaine called this "a kind of concentration camp " and described it as "frightening". There is also a documentary called Endgame - Blueprint for Global Enslavement . An American radio show, the Alex Jones Show , in which Mustaine appeared, said in 2009 that the title track was also inspired by the film. In 44 Minutes is about a shootout after a bank robbery in North Hollywood in 1997 , at the time of the event, the former drummer have Nick Menza lived only two blocks from it. Head Crusher is about a medieval instrument of torture. 1.320 ' is about nitro-powered racing cars, so-called funny cars .

reception

Allmusic's Eduardo Rivadavia called Endgame the least “commercial” album since Rust in Peace . It touches on many of the songwriting styles of the early years and thus gives the fan base little reason to complain. Endgame was rated three and a half stars out of five. In Rock Hard , Frank Albrecht emphasized the interplay between guitarists Broderick and Mustaine, and the songs also had "catchier hooks than last time". The rating here was 8.5 out of ten points. Endgame was also named “Album of the Month” with an average rating of 8.0 points. In the editorial staff of Whiskey-soda.de there were different opinions, which are reflected in grades from 3+ to 1-. At Laut.de , Michael Edele awarded four out of five stars. For him, the title track is musically the weakest on the album. The latter does not come close to Rust in Peace , but is not "particularly far removed" from it. On Metal.de , the reviewer called Endgame “the best Megadeth record” for 15 years and awarded nine out of ten points. The album was supported by the songs "Head Crusher" and "This day we fight!" positively received by the audience.
