Fear is an American punk rock band that was formed in 1977. The Los Angeles- based group, along with Black Flag , the Circle Jerks and others, are pioneers of California hardcore punk . The band has undergone numerous line-up changes, the only remaining founding member is singer Lee Ving, who was born in Minneapolis in 1950 .

history

The group was founded in 1977, but did not record in the beginning apart from a single in 1978 (Lee Ving also produced the Angry Samoans album Inside My Brain in 1980 ). Instead, the band gained a certain degree of popularity in Los Angeles through a large number of concerts. Among other things, they were noticed by actor John Belushi , who became a fan of the group and helped them to appear on Saturday Night Live in 1981 . Due to the chaotic show there, in which the dancing fans caused considerable damage to property, Fear gained national recognition. As a result, they received a record deal; In 1982 the debut album The Record was released .

In the following years Lee Ving was increasingly active as an actor, including 1983 in Flashdance and 1984 in Streets in Flames as well as in several television series. In 1984 bassist Flea dropped out to focus on his other band, the Red Hot Chili Peppers . A second album was recorded in 1985, but the split followed two years later.

In 1991 the group got back together and released the live album Live ... For The Record . In 1993 guitarist and founding member Philo Cramer and longtime drummer Spit Stix left the band, which was again dissolved. Lee Ving brought out another album in 1995 with three new musicians, including Zappa bassist Scott Thunes . In 1996 Ving was involved in the MD.45 project alongside Dave Mustaine , with which he recorded an album. After two further line-up changes, the last Fear album so far, American Bear, followed in 2000 . The two musicians Richard Presley and Mando Lopez, who play guitar and bass on this album, joined the band The Breeders shortly after the release .

The band played occasionally concerts in the following years in various line-ups, including taking part in the Warped Tour in 2009 and 2010 .
