The Last Stand is the eighth studio album by the Swedish heavy metal band Sabaton . It was released on August 19, 2016 by Nuclear Blast . In most of the events mentioned, the sung about soldiers are about the last resistance (English: "the last stand").
history
In an interview with the Hamburger Morgenpost on August 16, 2016, Pär Sundström commented on the album as follows: “It tells of battles over the past 2500 years. Skirmishes in which people in a losing position stood firm. […] I like 'Shiroyama' from the new album. I hope it stays in our setlist for a long time! "
Like most of the previous albums , The Last Stand was produced by Peter Tägegren . Like World War Live - Battle of the Baltic Sea and the two previous albums, The Last Stand was mastered by Jonas Kjellgren . Details about the pieces
Sparta
The song is about the battle of Thermopylae and the battle of the Greeks against the Persian overwhelming power.
Last Dying Breath
Last Dying Breath deals with the defense of the city of Belgrade against Austro-Hungarian and German troops at the beginning of the First World War . The piece is one of the few where the band toured the scene before writing the text.
Blood of Bannockburn
Blood of Bannockburn describes the events surrounding the Battle of Bannockburn , one of the decisive battles in the Scottish Wars of Independence of the late 13th and 14th centuries. In the booklet of the album "Sunmo", a lawyer friend of the band, is listed as an instrumentalist for the Hammondorgelsolo of the song. He specially traveled to Pärlby with his Hammond organ to play the solo there free of charge. It is a musical novelty for Sabaton from two perspectives. On the one hand, Blood of Bannockburn is the only piece in the group that includes bagpipes , and on the other, it is the first Sabaton piece to be written in major.
Diary of an Unknown Soldier
Diary of an Unknown Soldier is intended to describe the feeling of one of the soldiers who took part in the Meuse-Argonne offensive . At the same time it is the intro to the song The Lost Battalion .
The Lost Battalion
The Lost Battalion refers to nine companies of the 77th US Division during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive , one of the last major offensives of the First World War. The bass drum has been for the track by a sample of a 12.7-mm machine gun replaced, the snare drum through a sample of a 9 mm pistol and the hi-hat by the sample of a bayonet that penetrates into a human body.
Rorke's Drift
Rorke's Drift deals with the battle for Rorke's Drift in the 19th century in South Africa.
The Last Stand
The Last Stand is about the bravery of the Swiss Guard during the Sacco di Roma in 1527 .
Hill 3234
The song Hill 3234 deals with the Battle of Hill 3234 between Soviet paratroopers and Afghan mujahideen during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.
Shiroyama
Shiroyama deals with the Battle of Shiroyama , which took place on September 24, 1877 on Shiroyama Hill near Kagoshima between an imperial army and a few hundred rebel samurai and marks the end of the Satsuma rebellion .
Winged Hussars
Winged Hussars celebrates the heavy Polish cavalry of the Hussaria and their role in the liberation of Vienna in the second Turkish siege of Vienna .
The Last Battle
The Last Battle is about the common struggle between Wehrmacht soldiers and American GIs against the SS during the Battle of Itter Castle at the end of World War II in Europe.
All guns blazing
The cover piece by Judas Priest is one of four duets that the band has released. Before that, Thorbjörn Englund , who sings the second voice in the song, had already published a cover version in 2014, on which all instruments played himself. It was also planned to record the piece as a bonus track for Heroes in 2014 .
Reviews
- Lothar Gerber wrote for the Metal Hammer : “The power metallers also deserve credit for the fact that they did not slip into THE LAST STAND at a single whistle or skip candidate. We ignore the 'Creeping Death' quote in 'Hill 3234' or rate it as an homage to the greatest of the genre. If Avenged Sevenfold can get away with something like this, it is Sabaton all the more. All of this makes it clear: Sabaton want to continue surfing on their wave of success and climb the next level in order to fill stadiums by themselves in the medium term. The sound course is definitely set with this sabaton of hits. "
- Jürgen Lugerth judged the album quite negatively for laut.de : “Well then. All the Sabaton disciples of this world will be enthusiastic about the new product and hug their hearts full of euphoria and continue to celebrate beer-loving war hero parties in stadiums and halls. Swing to rock-packed stories of a thousand deaths. Who needs something like this, especially in times like these? By the way, the cover of the record is just another hideousness between field gray and dirty brown. Purely artistically inadequate, like all the rest. "
