Ferenc Somogyi [ ˈfɛrɛnʦ ˈʃomoɟi ] (born September 1, 1945 in Hartkirchen , Upper Austria ) is a Hungarian diplomat and politician .

Ferenc Somogyi began his political career in 1968 as a member of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry. Among other things, he worked in the Hungarian diplomatic missions in Myanmar and Nigeria. At the end of the 1990s Somogyi was State Secretary and responsible for Hungary's relations with the European Union . In the social democratic government of Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány he became foreign minister in autumn 2004 and remained in office until a cabinet reshuffle in June 2006. From 2007 to 2009 he served as ambassador to the United States .
