Mateusz Szczurek (born August 11, 1975 in Warsaw ) is a Polish economist and politician. He was appointed head of the Polish Ministry of Finance in 2013 at the age of 38 .

Szczurek studied at the University of Warsaw and from 1994 to 1997 took part in a joint program of the Warsaw University and Columbia University (School of International and Public Affairs) in New York City , from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts . In 1997 he obtained a master's degree in international economics. He subsequently received his PhD from the University of Sussex . From 1997 to 2011 he worked as an economist at ING Barings and then as chief economist (Central and Eastern Europe) at ING Bank Śląski . In 1998 and 2007 he took courses in econometrics at the International Center for Monetary and Banking Studies in Geneva and London . Szczurek is a lecturer in economics at the Szkoła Główna Handlowa w Warszawie , the University of Sussex and the Goethe Business School in Frankfurt am Main . He is also a member of the Society of Polish Economists ( Towarzystwo Ekonomistów Polskich ).

On November 20, 2013, the Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk nominated him to succeed Jacek Rostowski as Minister of Finance of the Republic of Poland. On November 27, 2013, the appointment was confirmed by President Bronisław Komorowski . Possible backgrounds to his appointment were discussed in connection with the wiretapping affair in 2014.

On November 16, 2015, Szczurek resigned as Minister of Finance, and was succeeded by Paweł Szałamacha .

In his spare time, Szczurek rides his bicycle; including in Rwanda , Central Asia and the Andes .
