Maciej Płażyński (born February 10, 1958 in Młynary , † April 10, 2010 in Smolensk , Russia ) was a Polish conservative - liberal politician.

Płażyński began his political career in 1980/1981 as one of the leaders of the Independent Student Union (NZS) . He also belonged to the opposition youth organization Ruch Młodej Polski (German: "Movement of Young Poland") in the 1980s . After the political upheaval in 1989, Tadeusz Mazowiecki appointed him in August 1990 as the first non-communist Gdansk voivode ; Płażyński held this office until July 1996. In September 1997, he was for the Solidarity Electoral Action (AWS, German "Election Action Solidarity") in the Sejm elected. From 1997 to 2001 he also held the office of Sejm Marshal .

In January 2001, he teamed up with Donald Tusk and Andrzej Olechowski , the Civic Platform - PO (Polish: Civic Platform ). He later left for personal reasons and was an independent parliamentarian until his death.

On September 25, 2007, Płażyński announced that he was running for the parliamentary elections on the PiS list in Gdańsk . He justified it by saying that in the event of a possible victory for the PiS, he could help to form a coalition with the PO and prevent a coalition between the PO and the Left and Democrats / LiD .

On April 10, 2010, Płażyński was part of a Polish delegation headed by President Lech Kaczyński , who was to travel to the memorial in Russia on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre . However, in the delegation's plane crash near the Smolensk-Nord military airfield , he was killed along with other high-ranking representatives of Poland.

Posthumously Płażyński was the Grand Cross of 16 April 2010 Order of Polonia Restituta (Krzyż Wielki Orderu Rebirth of Poland) awarded.

He was a member of the Kashubian-Pomeranian Association.

Maciej Płażyński was married to Elżbieta Płażyńska and had three children.
